As a makeup artist, I understand how important it is to have great skin for your wedding day. The foundation of any beautiful bridal makeup look starts with healthy, glowing skin. Here’s a skincare guide to help you get your skin ready for your wedding day!
1. Start Early (3–6 Months Before the Wedding)
Your skincare routine should begin well in advance of the big day. Here’s how you can set yourself up for success:
Consult a Dermatologist: If you have skin concerns such as acne, rosacea or hyperpigmentation now is the time to consult with a professional. They can recommend the right treatments or products tailored to your skin type.
Professional Facials: If you are local to Suffolk I can highly recommend trying the Hyd02 Facials which is not only insanely relaxing but leaves your skin feeling clean, hydrated and plump: https://www.lookwrightaesthetics.com/service-page/hydr02-facial
Aesthetics: If you are considering facial aesthetics such as Botox, Fillers or Skin Boosters, I would recommend you trial this well in advance and have your final session at least 6-8 weeks in advance. For my own treatments I see Donna at Look Wright Aesthetics.
Establish a Consistent Skincare Routine Early: Stick to a gentle skincare routine to cleanse and hydrate your skin daily. Use products that suit your skin type, consistency is key!

Exfoliation: Remember to exfoliate your skin at least once a week to remove dead skin cells and reveal a fresh, glowing complexion. You can use a chemical exfoliator (AHAs, BHAs) or a physical scrub, depending on your preference and skin sensitivity.
For most skintypes (not sensitive or those with rosacea) use a liquid exfoliant a few times a week at night after cleansing - Paula's Choice Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant for Clear Skin
For sensitive skin try a gentle exfoliating powder a few times a week at night instead:
3. Pre-Wedding Month:
As your wedding day approaches, your focus should be on maintaining your skin’s health and radiance.
Hydration is Key: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated. Well-hydrated skin looks plump, youthful, and more luminous.
Stay Consistent with Sunscreen: Sunscreen is a non-negotiable, daily step. UV damage can cause premature aging, dark spots and sunburn. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Remember, it’s important to apply sunscreen all throughout the year and every day, even if you're in doors. Be mindful not to get watch lines or top strap marks in the lead up to the wedding. Sunburn is near impossible to cover with makeup!
Spot Treatments: If you get the occasional breakout, use a targeted spot treatment (like salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide) to keep blemishes at bay. Avoid popping spots, as it can lead to scarring or inflammation.
Two Weeks Before Your Wedding:
Now, you’re in the final stretch. Here's how to ensure your skin stays calm and balanced leading up to the wedding:
Avoid New Products: Stick to products you know and love. Trying new skincare or makeup right before the wedding could cause irritation or breakouts.
Sheet mask: A hydrating mask can give your skin a boost. If your skin is looking a little dull, consider a hydrating sheet mask with ingredients like hyaluronic acid and ceramides.
Professional Facial: If you've already had a facial as a trial then you would have your pre-wedding facial appointment around 7-14 days before.
Stay Calm and Rested: Stress can cause skin issues like breakouts or redness. Be sure to get plenty of sleep and incorporate relaxation techniques like meditation or yoga.
Hydrate Your Skin: Use a suitable moisturiser both day and night to keep your skin feeling soft and smooth. You can also use a hydrating facial mist throughout the day for extra hydration.
Night Before the Wedding:
Cleanse Thoroughly: Make sure to double cleanse your skin before bed to remove any makeup, dirt, and oils that might clog your pores.
Exfoliate: Using your favourite face scrub or exfoliating toner to remove dead skin cells.
Hydrating Sheet Masks/Eye Masks: If you are planning on using these masks do this the night before not the morning of the wedding as this can leave a sticky residue on the skin affecting the makeup.
A Good Night’s Sleep: A full night of rest is one of the best ways to help your skin look fresh and energised. Go to bed early to wake up feeling rejuvenated.
Avoid Alcohol and Salty Foods: Alcohol can dehydrate your skin, and salty foods can cause bloating or puffiness. Try to avoid these in the evening before your wedding.
Morning of the Wedding:
Cleanse and Moisturise: Start with a gentle cleanse and apply a lightweight moisturiser only.
No SPF, No Exfoliants, No Vitamin C, No Sheet Masks!
Stay Hydrated: Keep water close by to keep your skin (and you!) hydrated throughout the wedding day. This will help your makeup last longer and prevent dryness.
Final Tips:
Patch Test Products: If you’re trying new products or makeup, always patch-test to avoid reactions on the big day.
Don't Forget the Neck and Décolletage: Extend your skincare routine to your neck and chest to ensure your entire skin looks radiant, especially if you’re wearing a strapless or off-the-shoulder dress.
Don't Overdo It: Less is more. Keep your skincare routine simple and stress-free. You don’t need to overcomplicate things—consistency and simplicity are key!
Your wedding day is a celebration and when you feel confident in your skin, it will radiate through your makeup and into every picture. Wishing you glowing skin and a beautiful wedding day!
